Jim Johnson, who represents one third of Obama Vice Presidential vetting committee has surcome to the non stop barrage from the right regarding his sub prime mortgage connections. Johnson, who took a hammering from the McCain campaign and the GOP for receiving a “special” mortgage from Countrywide Financial, has finally made the decision to resign from his post with the Obama campaign.
Just hours after the news of Johnson’s exit hit the airwaves Senator Barack Obama released a statement which addressed situation at hand, along with Johnson’s decision to step down from his position with the campaign:
“Jim did not want to distract in any way from the very important task of gathering information about my vice presidential nominee, so he has made a decision to step aside that I accept. We have a very good selection process underway, and I am confident that it will produce a number of highly qualified candidates for me to choose from in the weeks ahead. I remain grateful to Jim for his service and his efforts in this process.”
TPM points out that not only would this “controversy” linger endlessly had Johnson remained in connection with the campaign, it would end up hurting Obama in more ways then just the Vice Presidential selection process. It would in fact make Obama’s message, which attacks John McCain in regards to the sub prime crisis, a lot harder to justify - not to mention the accusations that would bellow from the right accusing Obama of being hypocritical.
