Hillary Clinton’s True Intentions: There’s More Then Meets the Eye

In todays New York Times Maureen Dowd looks to have finally seen the light, a obnoxiously bright light that many Democrats have been talking about for quite a while now. In her weekly editorial titled; Hillary or Nobody?, Dowd manages to navigate through the smoke and spin and catches on to what Hillary Clinton is really trying to do at this point of the primary process, a point where she has no real tangible chance of winning the Democratic nomination. In her piece Dowd goes through and outlines each point on Hillary’s “to do” list, with different possibilities and rational for a handful of possibilities, the majority of which, do not have the best intentions behind them. Anyways here they are:

  • The possibility that Hillary is beginning to think that Vice President may not be such a bad idea after all. Heck, look at Dick Cheney, he certainly called all the shots, and we all know thats what has Hillary salivating. But would Barack let this fly? probably not, and if it wasn’t him putting his foot down, it would be his wife Michelle.
  • The VP may in fact be for real for another, clear cut and understandable reason. One Hillary’s close friends has said she wouldn’t want to go back to a Senate, mainly because it would be full of fellow Democratic Senators who more or less abandoned her with their endorsements of Barack Obama. Moreover say she could get to be majority leader, which is the only thing I feel would quench her thirst for authority besides the presidency, how much would she be able to get done working with Nancy Pelosi, whose distaste for the Clinton’s has led her to subtly throw her support behind Obama?
  • All the Clinton Vice President talk could be nothing more then a red herring? A ploy designed to distract attention from the Clinton’s’ real endgame? Even some Clinton loyalists are wondering aloud if the win-at-all-costs strategy of Hillary and Bill, (which continued Tuesday when Hillary tried to drag Rev. Wright back into the spotlight) is designed to rough up Obama so badly and leave the party so broken that Obama will lose in November to John McCain. If McCain only served one term, Hillary would have one last shot. On Election Day in 2012, she’d be 65. Why else would Hillary suggest that McCain would be a better commander in chief than Obama, and why else would Bill imply that Obama was less patriotic then McCain.
  • Democrats are beginning to see what’s going on, and are increasingly worried that the Clinton’s’ divide-and-conquer strategy is nihilistic: Hillary or no democrat. Or, as one Democrat described it to ABC’s Jake Tapper: Hillary is going for the Tonya Harding option”, which is a strategy that employs the old “if you can’t get the gold, kneecap your rival” strategy.

And then there is the vanity of politics. There is no doubt that Hillary and Bill see themselves as the first family for the Democratic party, and they are correct in thinking this at least to an extent. This thought pattern includes demanding and until now, receiving, the adoration of Democrats, however these same Democrats are now starting catch onto the brilliance, intelligence and strong attraction that Barack Obama offers. And with this new trend means an end of an era for the Clinton dynasty.
