This morning, during an interview on National Public Radio, Senator Hillary Clinton made a big time mistake when she accidentally admitted to breaking her signed pledge to the DNC, and fellow candidates. Hillary energetically shot herself in the foot when she made the following statement. Or if you would prefer to listen to the entire interview, which is only about 7 minutes long, and is quite entertaining (especially watching her try to backtrack when she realizes she screwed up).
- Listen to the NPR Hillary Clinton Interview from 03/13/2008.
“… we all had a choice as to whether or not to participate in what was going to be a primary. And most people took their names off the ballot, but I didn’t. And I think that was a wise decision because Michigan is key to our electoral victory in the fall.”
Well that is nice and all, except this constitutes a direct and unequivocal violation of her signed pledge to the DNC, her fellow candidates, and most importantly the Democratic voters. You may be asking yourself “what is this pledge you keep referencing?”, well Hillary, along with all the other candidates signed a pledge saying that they would not to campaign or participate in the primaries which were being stripped of their delegates by the ruling body, aka the DNC. You can read the agreement for yourself, here is the relevant section of the pledge (pdf file):
THEREFORE, I (Hillary Clinton), Democratic Candidate for President, in honor and in accordance with DNC rules, pledge to actively campaign in the pre-approved early states Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina. I pledge I shall not campaign or participate in any election contest occurring in any state not already authorized by the DNC to take place in the DNC approved pre-window (any date prior to February 5, 2008).
This really isn’t even up for question or debate, the facts are well defined. By Hillary’s own admission, she has broken her pledge, she says it clear as day. Also she made it crystal clear that she had a choice to make, between honoring her pledge to the party, the other candidates, and the Democratic voters, or go ahead and roll the dice, assure herself the win, and hope that somewhere down the road the expelled delegates would be brought back into play. Sadly, she decided to break her word, and to me, that shows everything I need to know about her character as a human being, and politician.
