According to a Washington Post/ABC News News poll released earlier today Republican presidential nominee John McCain trails both Democratic candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in hypothetical, head to head general election match ups. Senator Barack Obama leads McCain by 12 percentage points: 52 percent to 40 percent; while Senator Hillary Clinton leads McCain by 6 points: 50 percent to 44 percent, the poll found. This poll was released around the same time Senator John McCain found himself side by side with George W. Bush in the White House rose garden in which the current president was giving McCain his “formal” endorsement. This friendship between McCain and Bush coincidently is one of the leading indicators, among other factors such as his age, to why the Arizona Senator finds himself lagging behind both Democratic presidential hopefuls.
McCain, endorsed by President George W. Bush, fares poorly against Clinton and Obama among Americans who disapprove of the president and Americans opposing the war, The Washington Post said.About two-thirds of Americans disapprove of the way Bush is handling his job and think the war was not worth fighting, the newspaper said.
Age might be another obstacle for 71-year-old McCain, who if elected would be the oldest first-term president.
The percentage of Americans discouraged by McCain’s age (27 percent) is more than double the number who would be less enthusiastic about supporting Obama, who would be the first African American president or Clinton, who would be the first female president, the Post reported.
The random telephone poll of 1,126 adults was taken February 28 through March 2 and has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points. And most importantly this poll acts as nothing but great news for all Democrats, no matter who they support in the ongoing Clinton/Obama nomination race. That being said, I think the message has got to be clear from Democratic leadership to both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that they need to keep the slanderous rhetoric, and negative campaigning to a minimum. Debating the issues is fine, pointing out differences is great, but the “kitchen sink” strategy Clinton employed in the days leading up to the March 4th primaries needs to stop.
