While giving a speech last week George W. Bush talked about the war in Iraq in a tone that was most likely supposed to feel up beat and positive. Bush’s comments included; “As we speak, Iraqi security forces are waging a tough battle against militia fighters and criminals, in Basra, many of whom have received arms and training and funding from Iran,” this came in his address to the United States Air Force museum in Dayton, Ohio. Bush continued with the lethargic rhetoric saying “Prime Minister (Nouri) Maliki’s bold decision, and it was a bold decision, to go after the illegal groups in Basra shows Iraq’s move towards a stable democracy.“
Well it appears as though George W. Bush forgot to mention a couple, rather important, details, regarding the “fight in Basra.” It turns out that over 1,000 Iraqi soldiers and policemen either refused to fight or simply abandoned their posts during the inconclusive assault against Shiite militias in Basra last week, this was confirmed by a senior Iraqi government official last Thursday. Iraqi military officials said the group of fleeing soldiers included dozens of officers, including at least two senior field commanders in the battle.
One senior American military official said the number of officers was less than a couple dozen at most,” but conceded that the figure could rise as the performance of senior officers was assessed, and oh did the numbers rise, from a couple dozen to just over 1,000 military personel fled the field of battle.
So while Bush continues his relentless championing of the Iraq War he really should consider giving American’s the full picture of what’s really going on over there. Granted the truth would not fit his “rosy red” portrayal of the conflict maybe he should keep in mind that it’s American life’s being lost by the day, and not just an ideological video game of “war”. Will this reality check ever dawn on President Bush? Probably not, that said, I feel it then becomes increasingly vital that the truth about whats really happening in Iraq is made available by as many news sources as possible.
