Here is a video that I just finished up that highlights a comical double standard that both the mainstream media and the general public impose when it comes to “radical” religious speech, the religious leaders who preach, sermonize, fund raise, et cetera and the politicians that they ally themselves. It shows it detail how the extreme Christian right perverted religion throughout the 80’s continuing on to the present day, all the while directly, and personally aligning themselves with many prosperous political figures on the right. This includes Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority, and the Christian Round table’s personal relationship with Ronald Reagan, all the way up until today’s far right religious groups connection with so many elected officials on the right.
The point of this video is not to claim that, “because they do it, it should be OK when we do it too”, it’s actually quite the opposite. The video is meant to shed light on the double standard, and to pose the question of if we are going to judge Obama on his personal relationships with religious figures then we should do that with all politicians, especially when looking at the fact Obama has come out too denounce the radical teachings time after time, thus making it clear he does not support, nor, agree with those particularity disparaging aspects of Rev. Wright’s sermons. While if that is going to be the bar politicians have to pass, then lets hold all of them to the same standards, not just the “liberal” candidates.
Anyways, the video is at the least an amusing display of political and religious hypocrisy, both on the part of our main stream media and a handful of our elected officials. I hope you enjoy the presentation, and I would love to hear some of your thoughts on the topic.
