A 17-year-old mimicking Brad Pitt’s Fight Club character, who planned attacks on corporate America, was arrested for masterminding a pre-dawn blast outside a Starbucks Coffee shop in New York.

Kyle Shaw was arrested on Tuesday night on charges of arson, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal mischief, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said on Wednesday.

He was awaiting arraignment on Wednesday.

The May 25 explosion near the Guggenheim Museum on New York City’s Upper East Side shattered the store’s windows but caused no injuries, and police do not believe it is related to other explosions around the city in the past four years: at the British Consulate in May 2005, the Mexican Consulate in October 2007 and the Times Square military recruiting station in March 2008.

Kelly said Shaw was trying to emulate the character named Tyler Durden, played by Brad Pitt, from the 1999 film about a nameless and spineless pencil pusher, played by Ed Norton, who takes up with the dangerous yet manly Durden.

The two take part in a secret “fight club”, where men beat one another to a pulp.

Shaw formed his own fight club in which boys beat one another in various locales around the city including Central Park, Kelly said. At least one member got a broken nose, he said.

The second, more dastardly plot hatched by Pitt’s character in the film was called “project mayhem” and included escalating attacks on symbols of corporate America.

Shaw apparently told at least one friend to “watch the news over Memorial Day” – a federal holiday at the end of May – because he was about to launch his own version of “project mayhem”, Kelly said. Investigators are looking into whether more people might have been involved.

Police say the suspect picked the site because a Starbucks was a target in the movie. It wasn’t clear why the specific coffee shop was chosen. There are dozens around the city.

The blast occurred around 3.30am. A witness reported seeing two people, one blonde, running from the scene.

The device, made of fireworks powder, a plastic bottle, a metal cap and electrical tape, was set off with a hand-lit fuse.

Investigators recovered homemade bomb materials, a copy of Fight Club, a box of sparklers and a newspaper clipping about the attack from Shaw’s home, Kelly said.

Investigators are still working to identify suspects in the other blasts and believe they were caused by the same person or group of people, Kelly said.

In those bombings, a lone bicyclist was seen in the area before the blasts, caused by either phony grenades or canisters packed with explosive powder. No was hurt in those blasts, either.

The Starbucks Corp has said it didn’t believe its store was hit intentionally.

A spokesperson said on Wednesday the company was aware of the arrest but could not comment further because the investigation was ongoing.

A lawyer for disgraced financier Bernard Madoff has sought a sentence of 12 years or less for his aging client, who he says “has an approximate life expectancy of 13 years”.

In a letter to the judge overseeing the case in New York, lawyer Ira Sorkin said any sentence longer than 12 years would constitute “an effective life sentence” for his client.

Madoff, 71, is due to be sentenced next week in a New York federal court. The former investor, who is accused of perpetrating a $US50 billion fraud, could face up to 150 years in prison.

Sorkin said the court should take into consideration Madoff’s surrender to police, acceptance of responsibility, cooperation with authorities, and the non-violent nature of his offence.

The letter said:

“A prison term of 12 years, just short of an effective sentence, will sufficiently address the goals of deterrence, protecting the public and promoting respect for the law, without being ‘greater than necessary’ to achieve them,”

Sorkin’s letter added that Madoff would describe his “pain” at the suffering his actions caused during an upcoming sentencing hearing.

“Both he and his counsel acknowledge the scope and magnitude of those losses and understand the victims’ calls for reprisal,”

But Sorkin urged the court to:

“set aside the emotion and hysteria attendant to this case and render a sentence that is just and proportionate to the conduct at issue.”

The captain of the US Airways Flight 1549 jet that landed in the Hudson River in January asked his co-pilot less than 20 seconds before splashing into the river,

“Got any ideas?”

The first officer, Jeffrey Skiles, replied to the captain, Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger:

“Actually not,”

The exchange, disclosed on a cockpit voice recorder transcript released in Washington, came after the crew unsuccessfully tried to restart engines and ruled out being able to bring the plane to a nearby airport.

The National Transportation Safety Board opened three days of hearings on the water landing, with Captain Sullenberger as the first witness. All 155 people on board made it out alive, scrambling onto the decks of ferries that came to the rescue as the jet drifted downstream.

Evidence in the January 15 incident indicates that a bird strike by migrating Canada geese robbed the Airbus SAS A320 engines of thrust after take-off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport en route to Charlotte, North Carolina.

According to the transcript, Captain Sullenberger said:

“Birds,”

The first officer said:

“Whoa,”

“Oh f****”

The comments began a 3½-minute period during which the plane’s engines lost almost all thrust.

The transcript records the captain addressing the passengers.

“This is the captain,”

“Brace for impact.”

Just before the plane hit the water, he said:

“We’re gonna brace.”

Captain Sullenberger, who grabbed the controls from his younger co-pilot after the power loss, told the board that “big, dark brown birds” filled his windshield just before he heard “booms”. At least three Canada geese hit the engines – the remains of two were found in one engine and one in the other, the Smithsonian Institution said.

The safety board is examining issues such as crew training, bird detection and engine safety standards at the hearings. It is months away from determining a cause of the accident.

The pilots have drawn praise for their professional demeanour in the cockpit. The Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, who awarded the crew the keys to his city, called Captain Sullenberger “Captain Cool.”

When a controller asked the captain if he wanted to land at LaGuardia, he replied: “We’re unable,” according to a transcript released in February. When asked about a different LaGuardia runway, he responded with one word: “Unable.” Finally he informed the controller:

“We’re gonna be in the Hudson.”

New Yorkers evacuated offices in panic on Monday when an unexpected overflight by one of President Barack Obama’s Boeing 747s triggered fears of a new 9/11.

The jumbo, escorted by low-flying fighter jets, roared over southern Manhattan and the Hudson River for about 30 minutes on what officials later described as a photo-op.
9/11 plane scare over New York

A government exercise involving low-flying planes creates a scare in New York City.

A livid New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he had not been warned and called the lack of notice “ridiculous and poor judgment“.

Stunned office workers who failed to spot the presidential markings feared facing a repeat of the attacks of September 11, 2001, in which two hijacked airliners smashed into the World Trade Centre, killing almost 3000 people.

Commodities trader Jurgens Bauer said:

“I saw everybody running and I ran out too. My heart is still pounding,”

Mr Bauer said that his room had no window so he had not seen the plane – which is painted white with a blue nose and blue stripe – but that the terror was real.

“I was there on 9/11. I saw thousands of people die. I don’t like when I am not aware of a military photo op,”

Police confirmed that some offices were evacuated, but did not specify how many.

“I guess people panicked,” a spokesman said.

Officials explained the confusion after saying that the commander in chief’s aircraft had merely been conducting an exercise. Mr Obama was not aboard.

US Air Force spokesman Major Richard Johnson said:

“The presidential airlift group conducted an aerial photo in the New York city area today,”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) called the manoeuvre a “photo op“.

FAA spokesman Jim Peters said:

“The Defence Department is conducting a photo op that involves deploying two F-16s and escorting a military version of the Boeing 747 close to lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty”

“The manoeuvre was not an emergency and was co-ordinated in advance with the FAA and state and local officials,”

But Mr Bloomberg said no one had told him of the visitors to New York’s skies.

The mayor, who is running for a third term later this year, said in televised comments that he was

“annoyed – furious is a better word – that I wasn’t told”.

“Why the Defence Department wanted to do a photo op right around the site of the World Trade Centre catastrophe defies imagination,”

“It didn’t have the normal language of saying that this is sensitive information.”

Hijackers slammed two planes into the twin towers of New York’s World Trade Centre in 2001, destroying the complex on the southern tip of Manhattan in what was the worst terrorist attack on American soil.

A reconstruction project has been hampered by financial and planning delays, but the foundations of new towers are now rising at Ground Zero.

Israel recalled its ambassador to Switzerland last night in protest over a meeting between the Swiss President, Hans-Rudolph Merz, and Iran’s President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Mr Ahmadinejad was greeted by the Swiss President after landing in Geneva on Sunday where he was due to address a United Nations conference on racism today.

Mr Ahmadinejad, who has described the Holocaust as a “myth” and vowed repeatedly to “wipe Israel off the map”, was expected to launch another inflammatory attack on Israel when he addressed delegates on the opening day of the conference.

The Israeli Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, branded Mr Ahmadinejad a racist and expressed outrage at the special treatment accorded him.

Mr Lieberman also questioned why the conference’s opening day was being held on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day:

“The fact that a racist like Ahmadinejad is the main speaker proves the true aim and nature of the conference,”

The Deputy Foreign Minister, Danny Ayalon, described the Swiss President’s meeting with Mr Ahmadinejad as pathetic and an embarrassment to Switzerland.

An Israeli Foreign Ministry official said:

“It is fair to say that the meeting between the Iranian President and the Swiss raised more than a few eyebrows,”

“We are extremely unhappy about it and our ambassador Ilan Elgar has been recalled for consultations,”

“We understand the Swiss are obliged to host the conference as part of their UN commitments, we understand that the Iranian President has to be given a visa. What we don’t understand is why the Swiss President greeted Ahmadinejad on arrival.”

The Geneva meeting is a follow-up to the UN’s first conference on racism in Durban, South Africa, in 2001, and is meant to take stock of progress in fighting racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance.

But after the first conference was dominated by criticism of Israel, in particular by Arab and Muslim nations, Israeli officials waged a campaign against the Durban II meeting, arguing it would be similarly marred by anti-Israel sentiment.

US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Germany and Poland joined in boycotting the conference because of concerns it would be used as a forum to bash Israel.

“Regrettably, we cannot be confident that the review conference will not again be used as a platform to air offensive views, including anti-Semitic views,”

The US President, Barack Obama, defended his decision not to send a delegation, saying that despite progress in negotiations in recent weeks, anti-Israel language in a draft final communique was “often times completely hypocritical and counterproductive”.

He told reporters in Trinidad:

“If we have a clean start, a fresh start, we’re happy to go to a future meeting”

Last night the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, thanked those countries that had boycotted the summit.

“Six million of our people were slaughtered in the Holocaust. Not everyone has learnt the lesson ,”

“While we commemorate them, a conference purporting to be against racism will convene in Switzerland. The guest of honour is a racist, a Holocaust-denier who makes no secret of his intention of wiping Israel off the face of the earth.”

The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, decried Western nations for boycotting the conference.

“Some nations, who by rights should be helping to forge a path to a better future, are not here,”

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said she was disappointed the US was not attending.

If ever the world would have forgiven a man for not being able to walk and chew gum at the same time, it would have been now. No one would blame Barack Obama if he focused exclusively on the economic crisis, pushing the foreign policy in-tray to the back of his desk. After all, there’s only so much even a Messiah can handle.

For all that, the new US President has crammed a slew of foreign policy moves into his first six weeks, any one of which would have made big news in normal times.

Instead, in the age of global economic meltdown, they have had to fight for more than fleeting media attention.

Most visible have been the big declarations, whether announcing the beginning of the end of the Iraq war, avowing that “the United States of America does not torture” or ordering that Guantanamo be closed.

In just the last week, we’ve had the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, dispatching officials to Syria as well as inviting Iran to talks on the future of Afghanistan – extending a hand to two states previously consigned to outer darkness.

The start of the month brought the revelation that Obama had written a secret letter to his Russian counterpart, Dmitri Medvedev, hinting at a deal in which Moscow would lean on Iran, urging it to abandon its quest for nuclear weapons, in return for the US scrapping its planned installation of a missile defence system in Russia’s eastern European backyard. A gesture to cap it all: the Obama Administration has moved to ease trade and travel restrictions with Cuba.

The question – 50 days into the administration – is:

is there a common thread of logic running through these moves, one that we might describe, however prematurely, as the Obama doctrine?

The first unifying theme, sounded minutes after he took the presidential oath, is a repudiation of the legacy of his predecessor. Obama is determined to signal to the world that he is the unBush. Some on the left and right alike have suggested that this is more symbolic than real, that in fact the basic lineaments of US policy remain in place.

Obama will keep rather a lot of troops in Iraq until the end of 2011, just as the Bush administration planned; he has intensified US involvement in Afghanistan, sending 17,000 more troops; and Robert Gates, George Bush’s defence secretary, remains in this post under Obama.

Put that to the Obama team and they don’t wholly deny it. The US did not become a different country on January 20, they say; its interests have not changed overnight.

The difference, says the new team in Washington, is that while the Bush folk were “forced” into realism after seeing their ideological dreams in ruins, “this is our starting point”.

What no one denies is that there is a clear advantage for the US in the rest of the world believing that a profound change has come about. Which is why the declaration by the Vice President, Joe Biden, that the US is pressing the “reset button” has become the current catchphrase of US diplomacy.

A benign assessment of the Obama record so far would see two other early traits.

The first is a readiness to speak the truth. Asked by The New York Times last week whether the US was winning the war in Afghanistan, he replied tersely: “No.”

After the Bush years, when those who followed the evidence were dismissed as dullards imprisoned in the narrow-minded confines of the “reality-based community”, such candour is a relief!

Second, there are some signs of imaginative thinking. Deploying the veteran of the Northern Ireland peace process, George Mitchell, to the Israel-Palestine conflict is one of those ideas that seems obvious – but only because it makes so much sense. The same goes for allocating the Afghan-Pakistan, or “Afpak”, file to the hardball maestro Richard Holbrooke.

But plaudits surely go to Obama’s direct appeal to Medvedev, with its echoes of the former US president John Kennedy’s resolution of the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. Just as JFK agreed to remove US missiles from Turkey if the Soviet Union took theirs away from Cuba, so Obama implicitly made a similar offer to Russia: you get Iran to back down and I’ll remove my interceptor missiles and radar stations from Poland and the Czech Republic. If such an initiative were to work, the knock-on effects would be multiple.

Take one: Israel has long hinted that if its friends were to make the Iranian threat go away, it would respond by moving forward on the peace track. For a long while that was assumed to mean military action against Iran. But if Obama’s Russia gambit were to succeed – and the critics claim Gates started work on these lines a year ago – the goal of an Iranian nuclear freeze, with all its ancillary benefits, would be achieved without a shot being fired.

To be clear, this is not guitar-strumming hippie dovishness, as the escalation in Afghanistan confirms – though one administration official warns against overinterpreting that move. It is a “time-buying exercise”, he says, ensuring things don’t get worse on the ground while the White House undertakes a strategic review of the entire Afpak region, from where, it argues, every major al-Qaeda attack since September 11, 2001, has emanated.

I’m told this was the thrust of Biden’s message to NATO’s North Atlantic Council in Brussels this week: not some kind of “wussy multilateralism”, with lots of cosy meetings and platitudes, but a “results-oriented” desire to get things done – and the belief that that only happens when the world acts in concert.

To be sure, these are only the early signals in the early days. But from a President with his hands full, they are encouraging.

A right-wing pundit has been caught red-handed manufacturing controversy after claiming US President Barack Obama’s Wikipedia page was being whitewashed, in a scandal that fooled big news outlets including Fox News.

Aaron Klein, the Jerusalem bureau chief at online news publication WorldNetDaily (WND), reported that Obama’s Wikipedia entry was far too positive and did not mention his claimed links with controversial pastor Jeremiah Wright and “Weatherman terrorist” Bill Ayers.

The entry also did not mention concerns surrounding Obama’s eligibility to serve as US commander-in-chief due to an alleged lack of proof that he was born in the US, Klein said. But Klein neglected to mention that there was an entire Wikipedia page dedicated to the Obama citizenship claims.

The claims are regarded in the US as conservative conspiracy theories.

Klein claimed Wikipedia’s army of volunteer editors were quickly censoring edits on the Obama entry and appeared on Fox News airing the claims.

He reported that a Wikipedia user, Jerusalem21, had attempted to add in the missing details but they were quickly deleted by a Wikipedia administrator for being “fringe” theories. When the user attempted to add the details a second time he was suspended from Wikipedia for three days.

Klein did not identify who owned the Jerusalem21 account but further digging by the ConWebWatch blog discovered that the only entry the user had tried to edit other than Obama’s was Klein’s. Jerusalem21 had created Klein’s entry and edited it 37 times, adding several links and pictures.

Claims that Jerusalem21 was Klein himself are backed up by discussions by Wikipedia administrators on the talk page attached to Klein’s entry.

One wrote:

“It reads as a total puff piece and was obviously heavily influenced by Klein himself and cronies/sockpuppets at WND,”

Further, when questions were raised about the identity of Jerusalem21, Klein edited his original story to remove references to Jerusalem21, replacing them with “one Wikipedia user“.

Eventually, in response to emailed questions from Wired News, Klein admitted he had a hand in engineering the facts used to stand up his scandal. But he blamed the Jerusalem21 edits on his researcher.

“I am not ‘Jerusalem21′, but I do know the Wikipedia user (he works with me and does research for me), and I worked with him on this story,” Klein said.

It is not clear whether he was referring to Klein but Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales recently wrote on his Twitter page: “Conspiracy theorists are exhausting. The facts mean nothing to them; their pursuit of a villain trumps all. Any response only brings ire.”

WorldNetDaily has a history of attacking Wikipedia and Obama. At the time of writing, two of the lead stories on the site are headlined “Obama earns an ‘F’ on performance” and “Has Obama been snubbing U.N. chief?”.

In December, WorldNetDaily editor Joseph Farah, miffed that his Wikipedia entry had been modified to include a line that he was a “noted homosexual”, wrote an opinion piece labelling the free encyclopedia “a provider of inaccuracy and bias” and a

“wholesale purveyor of lies and slander unlike any other the world has ever known”.

In May last year, another article accused Wikipedia of promoting porn by including

“detailed photos of nude homosexual men engaging in sex acts and a variety of other sexually explicit images and content”.

US vice-president Dick Cheney says he doesn’t know if the al-Qaeda terror leader Osama bin Laden is still alive – but thinks he is.

Asked if the elusive bin Laden was alive, Cheney said in an interview on Sunday: “I don’t know and I’m guessing he is.”

“We’ve had certain pieces of evidence become available from time to time, there’ll be a photograph released or something that allows the intelligence community to judge that he is still alive,” Cheney told Fox News on Sunday.

CIA Director Michael Hayden said in a speech on November 13 that bin Laden remains deeply isolated and has been forced to devote much of his energy to his own security.

Hayden suggested that bin Laden is hiding somewhere in the remote Afghanistan-Pakistan border region, where he said al-Qaeda has regrouped.

President George W Bush indicated on December 9 that bin Laden is still alive, but said the al-Qaeda mastermind and chief deputy Ayman Zawahiri will eventually get their due.

Bin Laden, the world’s most wanted man, has claimed responsibility for the September 11 attacks against New York and Washington that killed nearly 3,000 people and prompted the US-led invasion of Afghanistan.

Despite a massive manhunt and a $US25 million bounty on his head, he has evaded capture and has regularly taunted the United States and its allies through warnings issued via video and audio, mainly on the Internet.

General Motors is saving every cent it can, from shutting down escalators at night to limiting workers’ choice of pens, in case it needs to fight to survive beyond year’s end and until a friendlier Washington takes over.

Yet even a truckload of penny-pinching might not be enough.

GM has already cut its US work force by almost 80,000 this decade, reducing it to 96,000, and it has idled five factories and laid off 11,000 domestic workers this year alone.

The cost-cutting has accelerated as cash has dwindled. Factory supervisors who are seldom at their desks have had their landline phones and voice mail yanked. Elevators and escalators are shut down at night at GM’s headquarters towers in Detroit.

The slimmed-down choice of pens in office supply cabinets: one each of black, red and blue.

Spokeswoman Renee Rashid-Merem said:

“It seems trivial, but when you have 100,000 employees or however many using supplies, they don’t need to be that prolific. It adds up,”

All the while, the once-mighty icon of American industry and its smaller competitor Chrysler edge closer to bankruptcy.

Experts say their best shot is for President-elect Barack Obama to persuade the outgoing White House to free emergency loans from the $US700 billion federal bail-out, or to have the Federal Reserve make a loan.

The $US14 billion car-industry bail-out bill died in the Senate late on Thursday after the United Auto Workers refused to accept Republican demands for swift wage cuts to bring UAW workers’ pay in line with Japanese carmakers.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he hoped President George Bush would tap the Wall Street bail-out fund for emergency aid to the carmakers.

Barring that, GM and Chrysler must continue to cut even the smallest expenditures and hold off payments to parts suppliers as they hoard cash and try to stay alive until Mr Obama takes office on January 20 and could take his own action.

GM has hinted it might not make it through the end of the year before running out of cash. But GM board member Kent Kresa said this week that the company might make it into the first quarter, depending on car sales.

Kresa said:

“Certainly it has been stated that we need the money quite soon,”

“I can’t specifically state before the end of the year, but certainly in the first quarter and early in the first quarter.”

GM wants a total of $US18 billion in government loans, including $US4 billion before this year runs out. And Chrysler, which is looking for $US7 billion in loans, may be even closer to the edge.

Its CEO, Robert Nardelli, said its cash would drop to $US2.5 billion, its minimum to survive, at the end of the year. It has cut 32,000 workers since private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP took over control in August of last year, including 25 per cent of its salaried workforce last month.

The other of the Detroit Three, Ford, is not yet seeking government loans but wants a $US9 billion line of credit that it might need to tap if the depressed US car market doesn’t recover. It says it can last through next year because it borrowed billions two years ago, when credit was freely available.

The possibility remains that a deal can still be worked out in the Senate. Republican opponents, mainly from Southern states, probably don’t want to bring the industry down, said David M Hart, associate professor of public policy at George Mason University in Virginia.

“It’s certainly not beyond the scope of possibility that they’ll get this thing through,” Hart said. “I think it’s hard for Republicans to have this on them. There’s a lot of pressure. They might work out a deal.”

Hundreds of thousands of jobs hang in the balance. The Detroit Three employ 239,000 workers in the US.

Counting other businesses that depend on the carmakers, economists estimate that 2.5 million jobs would be lost if all three companies went out of business.

Susan Helper, a professor of economics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland who has studied the car industry, said GM and Chrysler’s suppliers are the key to keeping the carmakers out of bankruptcy protection if they are forced to stretch and try to make it past Obama’s inauguration.

Suppliers, also cash-strapped, may start demanding payment in advance before shipping parts. If enough suppliers get nervous and start demanding cash, the companies could run short.

“Then you have this game of musical chairs where everyone wants to make sure they’re not the one left without a chair,” she said. “That very process can bring the whole structure down. Right now the suppliers have been incredibly disciplined and not saying, ‘Hey, pay us first’,” she said.

Already, a small number of GM suppliers have sought cash on delivery, but the company is working through the situation, CEO Rick Wagoner said last week.

“I would say there are a couple situations that we are managing, but on balance I’d say it’s really held in there quite well,” he told the AP.

When Chrysler tried to stretch its money until it could get a government-guaranteed loan in 1980, it ran short of cash two weeks before the loan came through, said Steve Miller, an assistant treasurer at the time who now is executive chairman of Troy-based Delphi Corp, GM’s former parts wing.

“Any one supplier could have pulled the rug out from under us and prevented us from building cars,” Miller said in an interview.

But suppliers, he said, knew their futures were dependent on Chrysler’s financial health.

“We hung in there and the suppliers stayed with us,” Miller recalled.

If, for whatever reason, the companies go into Chapter 11 protection, credit is so tight that they might not be able to get bankruptcy financing, Helper said. A bankruptcy judge, she said, could hold off creditors and possible liquidation until the companies arranged financing, most likely from the government.

She said:

“It seems pretty clear that the only potential provider of the [bankruptcy] financing is the Government,”

“You’d have some period of figuring out the terms under which that … financing is going to be offered.”
