BEIJING - Michael Phelps beat Milorad Cavic of Serbia to the wall to win the 100-meter butterfly Saturday, tying Mark Spitz’s record of seven gold medals at a single Olympics.

With his arms fully outstretched, the American touched in 50.58 seconds, brreaking Cavic’s Olympic record of 50.76 set in the semifinals.

Cavic, who was still in mid-stroke at the wall, took the silver in 50.59, a mere 0.01 seconds behind Phelps. Andrew Lauterstein of Australia earned the bronze in 51.12.

It was the first race of these games in which Phelps didn’t set a world record. Crocker, the world record-holder, was fourth in 51.13. Phelps won the event four years ago in Athens, and Crocker finished second.

USA Basketball Continues to March Down Redemption Road

August 15, 2008

BEIJING - The United States stopped the pick-and-rolls, and just about everything else, to beat Greece 92-69 Thursday at the Beijing Olympics. These Americans that looked so lost two years ago appear to have found their Olympic defensive way. Batting away balls or swatting shots on seemingly every possession late in the second quarter, the Americans broke open a close game and went on to win big.

Kobe Bryant and Chris Bosh each scored 18 points for the United States (3-0), which clinched a spot in the medal round and moves on to a match up of Group B unbeatens Saturday against world champion Spain. The winner will earn the group’s top seed for the quarterfinals.

Dwyane Wade added 17 points and LeBron James scored 13.

Greece stunned the Americans two years ago in the semifinals of the world championships, shredding the U.S. defense for 63 percent shooting with clinical execution of its pick-and-roll offense in a 101-95 victory.

This time, the Americans had an answer for everything, using a suffocating defense to extend a seven-point lead into a 19-point cushion in the final 5 1/2 minutes of the first half.

Theo Papaloukas scored 15 points for Greece, which found things easy against the Americans two years ago but not this time. The Greeks had 26 field goals but committed 25 turnovers.

Here is ESPN’s Ric Bucher giving an in depth analysis surrounding Team USA’s huge win over Greece, as well as their overall performance up until this point both as individual players, and more importantly - a team.

Team USA faces Pau Gasol and the rest of Spain Saturday morning at 10:15 a.m. This match up should be a lot of fun to watch, but if the American’s play like they have been this contest, just like all the others so far in Beijing, will be a one sided victory for the good guys - USA.

It is however important to note that Gasol sn’t the only NBA talent on Spain’s roster. In fact there are three other NBA players — Jose Calderon of the Toronto Raptors, Juan Carlos Navarro of the Memphis Grizzlies and Rudy Fernandez of the Portland Trail Blazers. All of whom are currently on their respective teams roster.

Gotta Love Beach Volleyball: Round Deux

August 14, 2008

First and foremost let me get it out of the way and let it be known that I love womens beach volleyball. Why you ask? Simple, the women, the setting (love the beach) and of course the athleticism. So here is another slide show made in tribute to the beach bunnies who dominate day in and day out on the sandy courts.

Stephen Colbert Weights in on Hillary’s “Post Primary” Behavior

August 12, 2008

As Denver and the Democratic National Convention that will take the city over just a few short weeks from now have seemed to trigger somewhat of a “reload” which has Hillary Clinton supporters doing what they do best - making demands: some want Hillary to somehow get all those delegates supporting Obama to just, ya know - “change their minds,” and decide Hillary should be the Democratic candidate, while others are less demanding (basically the lesser of two evils) is crying out for a roll call vote on the convention floor with Hillary’s name on the ballot. This of course is the equivalent to the New England Patriots demanding a shot in sudden death overtime after the clock hit zero, and the Giants had won.

So with all of this irrational banter spewing from just about every orifice of media (the internet, TV, newspapers, etc, etc.) who better then Stpehen Colbert to weigh in on the topic, and provide us with some of that superior intellect he has become famous for.

Here is a video clip that has Stephen Colbert discussing the upcoming Democratic National Convention, as well as any alterior motives Bill and Hillary might have for their spotlight roles as part of the convention, and of course Colberts unique, “cut through the fat” analysis of the situation as a whole:

Carey Hart’s Younger Brother Killed in Moto-Cross Accident

August 10, 2008

Following in what seems to be the week long “tragedy” theme (Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes) it’s now being reported that moto-cross legend Carey Hart has lost his younger brother Anthony, who was only 21 years of age. While the specifics are still trickling out TMZ.com has managed to confirm the story as well as some of the broader details of the incident:

“Anthony Hart, Carey Hart’s brother, died yesterday after wrecking his motorcycle at Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut.

Hart, 21, crashed during a practice session for the Doug Henry New England Grand Prix, which is part of the American Motorcyclist Association’s XTRM Supermoto Championship series.

Anthony was critically injured when he lost control of his motorcycle and slammed into a wall. He was airlifted to Hartford Hospital where he later died.”

Carey Hart, who literally is a legend bigger then any other in the world of motor-cross currently resides in Las Vegas where he is opening a new business venture that will compliment his already uber popular tattoo parlor, which was the center of a reality TV show on A&E.

Anthony Hartalso resided in the greater Las Vegas area and according to those who knew him best was attached to his older brother whenever their schedules allowed them to be.

At the time of this report Connecticut state troopers were awaiting results of an autopsy that was expected to be completed on Monday and released to the public. Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of the victim. RIP.

Isaac Hayes Dead at Age 65

August 10, 2008

The AP - With its riveting orchestration, definitive guitar play and signature sensual baritone vocals, Isaac Hayes’ theme song for the 1971 movie “Shaft” not only became one of pop music’s iconic songs, but also the defining work of Hayes’ career. Yet the “Theme from Shaft,” which would earn both Grammy’s and an Oscar, was just a snippet of the groundbreaking music for which Hayes, who died Sunday at age 65, was responsible.

“They’re Baaack”: John Stewart on the Clinton’s Return

August 8, 2008

I try not to do multiple clips a day that come from the same show - but every once and a while it is out of my control, and frankly the scenes are so good that I simply don’t have a choice in the matter and am forced to post two or three. That’s the case today with Comedy Centrals “The Daily Show w/ John Stewart”, where I posted a clip earlier and now am posting a second.

So while I am double dipping in regards to the ole video content, I think that you will see why I had no other option when deciding to toss it up or not. It really is that funny.

Watch Stewart chronicle the Clinton’s return, or attempted return, to the Presidential fray in a way that only John Stewart can:

Stewart Highlights Some of the Bizarre Political Accusations Being Thrown Around

August 8, 2008

Here’s an hilarious clip from Comedy Centrals “Late Night w/ John Stewart” that has the comical host poking fun (aka: doing what he does best) at just about everyone involved in the election - McCain, Obama, liberals, and most of all - the biggest culprit when it comes to the dumbing down of Political discourse - the mainstream media.

He points out that they (the media, talking heads, “experts”, etc) are playing literally every “card” one could imagine. These include the race card, the Europe card, the age card, the elitist card, the experience card, the change card, the populist card, the fear card, the patriotism card, the women card, the class card, the Maliki card, and so on, and so on…

John Stewart: “McCain just played the ‘Get the f*ck out of my face card!!!”

God I love this show, I mean the race genie at the end, and the highlighting of just how inept, and uniformed the mainstream media is in their complete and utter failure in reporting the “news”, opposed to the sensationalized trash mag style they have come to adopt over the years.

Katie Holmes reveals nerdy past

August 8, 2008

Katie Holmes has revealed she was a nerd at school.

The former Dawson’s Creek actress - who is now married to Mission: Impossible star Tom Cruise - admits despite her calm and elegant exterior, she is actually just like everybody else.

She said: “I can’t deny that I’m a nerd. I am who I am. I’m pretty normal, I’m not a smooth type of girl, I run into things, I trip, I spill food, I say stupid things - I really don’t have it all together. But I’m working on it - I really am.”

Katie also revealed she never had much luck with boys while she was at school.

She added to Britain’s OK! magazine: “In hindsight, I think going to an all-girls school meant we missed out socially. We came out of school and it was suddenly, ‘Oh my God! Boys!’ I was all about, ‘How do I look? What is he thinking?’

“We weren’t used to being around boys in a normal setting and seeing them as friends.”

Sir Paul writes song for Heather

August 5, 2008

Sir Paul McCartney has written an “emotional and powerful” song for ex-wife Heather Mills.

The former Beatles legend – who agreed to pay Heather a staggering £65 million ($138.6 million ) divorce settlement following a bitter public battle earlier this year – has teamed up with electronic music star Nitin Sawhney to record the acoustic ballad entitled My Soul.

Sawhney said: “Paul has done a track about how he feels about Heather and what was going on with the paparazzi because no one has heard his side of it at all - so this will be the first time anyone hears a song relating to that subject. It’s a very emotional and very powerful song.”

A friend of the musician added to the MailOnline website: “What the song shows is that rather than feeling embittered towards Heather, Paul just feels sorry for her.

“He feels sorry that she was never able to tell him the full truth about her past life. He feels that their romance happened so fast and so publicly that a lot never really got said.

“Paul knows Heather is a complex person, and deeply misunderstood - but that she has hardly helped herself by being less than transparent about her life.”

Lyrics on the heartfelt ballad include Paul singing about how Heather helped him cope following the death of his first wife Linda in 1998, and phrases such as, “We could climb every mountain, swim through every sea. When the all world is asleep we could set ourselves free.”

The song will appear on Sawhney’s new record London Undersound, which will be released in October.
