Camelot Embraces Sen. Barack Obama

Senator Ted Kennedy the senior statesman from Massachusetts is the known in Washington as the “liberal lion” and just a few minutes ago threw his support behind Barack Obama giving the Illinois Senator a rousing endorsement from the steps of the American University. Accompanying the Mass. Senator were his son and Congressman Patrick Kennedy, and his niece, JFK’s daughter, Caroline Kennedy who is fresh off her weekend editorial which appeared in the New York Times in which she compared Barack Obama to her beloved father. Teddy Kennedy opened his speech by turning to Caroline and proudly proclaiming that:

“Your mother and father would be so proud of you today.”

After offering heartfelt praise of both Hillary and John Edwards, Kennedy distills down his message about Obama:

“I believe there is one candidate who has extraordinary gifts of leadership and character, matched to the extraordinary demands of this moment in history…
He will be a President who refuses to be trapped in the patterns of the past.”

Kennedy also hits high notes on Obama’s appeal to “the young,” the power of the young to effect change, Obama’s early opposition to the war, and “his grit and his grace.” Then, Kennedy, in a reference to Hillary’s campaign message that seems tailor made for a future political ad, also said that Obama will be ready to be president “on day one.” In his closing, Kennedy, in what’s of course a reference to JFK, closes on the key quote: “It is time again for a new generation of leadership.”
