Bill Clinton was at Indiana University yesterday delivering his usual stump speech on behalf of his wife, however there was a noticeably small crown on hand listening to the former president who usually brings in huge crowds. Where were the I.U. students? Well the would-be attendees were waiting in line for free tickets to a Dave Matthews Band concert being given out by none other then the Barack Obama campaign. Right around the same time Bill Clinton’ was scheduled to begin his speech, the Obama campaign started giving out tickets to Sunday’s DMB concert at I.U. Seeing as though DMB still remains a huge draw on college campuses across the country, flocks of students who had been waiting for Bill Clinton left to go grab their free tickets, leaving poor Bill alone.
Jason Schechtman, 19, Deerfield, Ill., a student at IU, got his tickets about 8 p.m. after waiting more than three hours. He met folks in line who said they’d left the Clinton rally to wait for tickets:
“I was leaning toward Obama, but this sealed the deal for sure,” he said. “The Obama campaign announced this right as (Bill Clinton) was about to speak, and it brought everyone from over there to over here.”
What can you do ya know, I mean you can’t really compete with free concert tickets no matter who you are or what you represent especially when you are dealing with college kids. The tickets will win every time. That said, I really think Obama should keep this strategy in mind for November, but utilize it so older fans will be swayed to support you in turn for tickets as well, get Cher, or Barbara Streisand to agree on free concerts for those who vote Obama and I do think success will be inevitable.
