Republican Senator Susan Collins was the chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee, that is until the Democrats took over the Senate back in the 2006 mid-term elections. Collins now finds herself creeping steadily to facing another Democrat entity, which would not only take her committee position, but her job altogether. The person I am referring to is (D) Tom Allen, who is running against Collins for her coveted Senate seat in the great state of Maine.

Allen is using Collins former position (chair of Homeland security) against her, charging that Collins’ failure to hold any oversight hearings on contracting fraud and abuse in Iraq led to massive waste and even the loss of lives, and it appears as though this message is attracting some attention, as Allen begins to steadily creep up on Collins, a reality which is reflected in the most recent polls too come out of Maine.

Take a look at the latest polling data from Rasmussen, which show Democratic challenger, Rep. Tom Allen, jumping 6 points since their previous poll released April 1, the 6 point jump is worth noting because the timing corresponds with Allen’s new message, thus showing that it’s working, and because up until now, Allen had yet to gain 6 points or more in one polling cycle, that is until this one:

Rasmussen Reports: 2008 Maine Senate Race

  • (R) Susan Collins: 52% (last poll: 54%)
  • (D) Tom Allen: 42% (last poll: 38%)

There here’s a a video segment courtesy of the Portland Press Herald which divulges into the specifics of the Allen/Collins which is really looking to turn out to be quite a bit closer that many had previously predicted:
