February 11, 2009

US lawmakers have announced an agreement on a compromise $US789 billion stimulus plan, and say they hope to have it ready for President Barack Obama’s signature in the coming days.
“I’m particularly pleased that we have produced an agreement that has the top line of $US789 billion, that it’s less than either the House or the Senate-passed bills,” Republican Senator Susan Collins told reporters on Wednesday.
Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said: “The difference between the Senate and House versions we’ve resolved. The bills were really quite similar.
“And I’m pleased to announce that we’ve been able to bridge those differences,” he said, expressing his hope to have a vote in both chambers of Congress
“within the next few days, maybe as early as tomorrow”.
