Bestselling author Michael Crichton dies

November 5, 2008

Bestselling author and filmmaker Michael Crichton has died from cancer in Los Angeles.

The author sold over 150 million books, including Jurassic Park, and it’s sequel, The Lost World, which were turned into highly successful films. He was 66.

The Entertainment Tonight website reports that Crighton’s family said his death was unexpected, even though he was waging a private battle against cancer.

“While the world knew him as a great storyteller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us and entertained us all while doing so, his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes,” Crighton’s family said in a statement to Entertainment Tonight.

“He did this with a wry sense of humour that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget.”

Crichton co-wrote the screenplay for the film version of Jurassic Park, directed by Steven Spielberg, and the screenplay for the movie Twister.

He was also the author of Congo, later adapted into a film, and is responsible for creating the hit TV show ER.

Crichton was a Harvard Medical School graduate and his awards include an Emmy, a Peabody, and a Writer’s Guild of America Award for ER.

I think he had an interesting mind, an impressive work ethic, and a talent for finding different subject matter. I’m sorry he is gone.

Got something to say?
