National Press Club Invites a Known Fugitive & Chronic Liar to Speak
June 18, 2008
Apparently the National Press Club is raising their already heightened standards (you know, the ones which deemed Reverend Jeremiah Wright worthy) too featuring speakers who have a lifelong history of crime, along with open warrants in Colorado. I am referring to the NPC’s decision to allow Larry Sinclair, a documented liar, to speak in Washington D.C.
Sinclair, who already failed a lie detector test aimed at getting to the bottom of his accusations has quite a colorful past – one which Ben Smith of Politico.com covers quite thoroughly in a profile piece dedicated to the hare brained criminal the National Press Club felt worthy too speak in front of what used to be, America’s most esteemed panel of press personnel.
Ben Smith writes:
Larry Sinclair is wanted in Colorado, but you can catch him today at the National Press Club.
Sinclair is familiar to political junkies and reporters as the source of outlandish allegations about Senator Barack Obama, tales that began with sex and drugs and moved on to murder.
The Duluth, Minn., resident is the sort of figure who appears at the margins of every presidential campaign, and both Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton had their own obscure accusers with dramatic allegations. But as the old media ignores him, Sinclair has taken full advantage of the Internet, and a video in which he makes his claims that have been viewed more than 900,000 times on YouTube. This afternoon, he’s reserved the Holeman Lounge at downtown Washington’s National Press Club to try to lend his story the legitimacy that comes with national media attention.
Sinclair’s biography, though, may get in the way of that pitch: Public records and court filings reveal that he has a 27-year criminal record, with a specialty in crimes involving deceit. The record includes forgery charges in two states, one of which drew Sinclair a 16-year jail sentence. The Pueblo County, Colo., Sheriff’s Office also has an outstanding warrant for Sinclair’s arrest for forging an acquaintance’s signature and stealing her tax refunds.
“It is what it is,” said Sinclair’s spokesman, Montgomery Blair Sibley, of his client’s criminal record. “He’s not hiding from it, he’s not denying it.”
Sinclair has, however, addressed elements of his criminal past on his own blog and in court filings punctuated by unusual spellings and capitalizations.
Addressing the Pueblo County theft charges, Sinclair swore in a 2004 affidavit that his “ALLEGED VICTIM SEEKS TO USE DEFENDANT AS SCAPE GOAT FOR HER HUSBANDS AND BROTHERS PROBLEMS WITH MEXICAN DRUG DEALERS.”
Sinclair’s affidavit, which he posted to his blog, accompanied a request to a Colorado judge to dismiss the warrant on the grounds that Sinclair was “disabled with [a] severe spine injury and nerve damage,” that returning to Colorado would put his life in danger, and that he was “terminally ill.”
Sinclair, who is still alive, is 46, stands 5′7″, and weights 168 pounds, according to arrest records. Colorado records list him with 13 aliases, including “Larye Vizcarra Avila” and “Mohammed Gahanan.” His story has generally been ignored by the mainstream media, because he’s been unable to substantiate his allegations. He has come to public attention recently, however, because his planned appearance at the National Press Club drew complaints from a wide array of prominent liberal bloggers, led by Firedoglake’s Jane Hamsher. Their petition to prevent Sinclair from renting space at the club which bloggers feared would lend him credibility drew more than 11,000 signatures.
Press Club President Sylvia Smith said Sinclair had rented space at the club, which doesn’t censor speakers.
“I’m not aware that we’ve ever turned anybody away for content,” she said, adding that Sinclair’s allegations “don’t seem very credible.”
Politico isn’t reprinting Sinclair’s allegations because they are unsubstantiated.
This February, the website Whitehouse.com reportedly offered Sinclair $100,000 if he could pass a polygraph test verifying his claims. He took them up on it, and the site said in a press release that the polygraph organizers said his results “indicated deception.” Sinclair then suggested the polygraph’s sponsors had been bribed to skew the results against him, an allegation his lawyer, Sibley, said he would expand on at his press conference.
Sibley is best known as the lawyer for the “D.C. Madam,” the late Deborah Jeane Palfrey. Earlier this year, the Florida Bar Association suspended Sibley’s license to practice law, in part for being a “vexatious litigant,” a suspension that applies in Washington, D.C., as well.
Wednesday, Whitehouse.com has scheduled a competing press conference outside the National Press Club to discuss the results of the polygraph.
Sinclair’s brushes with the government long predate his recent interest in Senator Obama. The details of his criminal record surfaced after he filed a defamation suit in federal court in Washington, D.C., against three anonymous online critics with names like TubeSockTedD who had written, among other claims, that he was living in a mental institution at the time he allegedly met Obama. Sinclair denies the claim.
In response to his suit, a lawyer for the anonymous bloggers hired local attorneys and private investigators, and dug up details of Sinclair’s criminal record from Colorado, Florida, and South Carolina. The lawyer, Paul Levy of the nonprofit Public Citizen Litigation Group, provided his client’s filings in federal court, which are publicly available, to Politico.
The records tell the story of an itinerant life of small-time crime and bad checks, punctuated by stretches of jail time in two states.
He was first arrested on a larceny charge in 1981 in Denver, according to his Colorado arrest record, as filed in federal court. In 1985, he was convicted of theft and of forging a check in Florida, and sentenced to a year in jail, according to Florida records filed in federal court.
After the Florida episode, according to the records, he returned to Colorado, where he faced check fraud and credit card charges in 1986. Then, in 1987, he was convicted in Colorado on more serious forgery charges, and sentenced to 16 years in jail.
In prison, according to state records filed in federal court, Sinclair was disciplined 97 times for infractions including assault, threats, drug possession, intimidation, and verbal abuse, most recently in1996.
“He has not institutionalized well,” a spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Corrections, Liz McDonough, told the Denver Post in 1996 after a month-long Sinclair hunger strike. She said he had served time in prisons in Buena Vista, Delta, Limon and Canon City before being transferred to the state’s maximum security penitentiary in 1993.
Pretty insane huh? I mean I cannot get over the fact this deeply troubled individual is receiving any attention, let alone an open invitation from the National Press Club. Remember Sinclair’s entire accusation is based off a youtube video which he produced in what appears to be a school basement, utility closet, or dorm room.
It’s the equivalent of me making a youtube clip claiming to have walked in on John McCain amidst a sexual escapade with a stuffed animal. Then, with absolutely nothing else backing my story, and after a failed lie detector test, me receiving an invitation to speak at the National Press Club. Give me a break…

Th is a follow up on your headline that could apply to a number of politicians as well. especially the liar .
The story begins with Larry but is now about Donald Young who was the Gay Choirmaster of the “God Damn Amerrica” Trinity Church. Was as in the passed on tense. He’s dead – murdered. Donald had been the go between the Obama campaign and Larry. Larry is seeking the phone records of the Obama campaign to verify this in his lawsuit. Yeah he has been in trouble. He is in trouble and still he seems to invite trouble. He has a story convoluted, lurid and dark. His trouble really began when he contacted the Obama campaign. Dig into it.

First allow me to explain that on Monday, June 16, 2008 I was contacted by Special Agent Brenda Born of the DC FBI informing me that the FBI had identified and located the individual who threatened to kill me, my lawyer and my mother at the NPC. Agent Born confirmed the individual was a resident of the DC area and was an adult. What was shocking to me is that Agent Born informed me that the US Attorney in DC had decided not to file charges against this individual and that the identity of the person could not b provided to me or my attorney without the approval of the US Attorney.
As for my arrest at the NPC on Wednesday June 18, 2008 after the conclusion of the PC, I see that no one has bothered to print the truth so allow me. First, the PC was in fact packed with PRESS contrary to the bloggers who want others to believe otherwise. Shortly before 1:00 PM a line had formed causing the NPC to ask us to begin sign in because the lobby was filling up.
At the conclusion of the PC, NPC Security head had brought three (3) plain clothed DC Police Detectives into the room and introduced them to me. All three identified themselves as DC Police detectives and that they had a “Fugitive from Justice” warrant from Delaware. These detectives did not escort me out in hand cuffs as reported by others. All three were very professional, polite and respectful. When asked for a copy of the warrant, they stated they had it in the car.
On Thursday June 19, 2008 I appeared before Judge Melendez in the DC Superior Court. I asked that the court release me and allow me to immediately report to Delaware authorities which the US Attorney and the Judge refused to do. Further, even though the Judge and the US Attorney was informed of my being denied access to my medication and medical treatment, the US Attorney demanded a bail of $75,000.00 which was completely inappropriate considering that Delaware did not have a “Fugitive from Justice” warrant against me, and the Judge and US Attorney both KNEW this was in fact the case.
I was ordered held for Delaware which I waived extradition, and I was held in the DC Jail [from 6-19-08 until approximately 10:30am Monday June 23, 2008] and deny access to phone, medication, and medical treatment. When picked up on Monday June 23, 2008 by Delaware officials, I asked why there would be a “Fugitive from Justice” warrant for my arrest. I was informed that there was no such warrant issued by Delaware, but that in fact DC had made that charge against me in order for them to arrest me on the “Rule 9″ warrant that was pending from a Delaware “SEALED” Grand Jury warrant. I was told that what DC should have done was advise me to report to Delaware. This rule 9 warrant was explained to me as being nothing that anyone could call me a “Fugitive from Justice” on because I had never been served the notice, taken into custody or formally charged on as yet.
Upon my return to Delaware, I appeared before a Superior Court Judge at 2:30 pm at which time I was released on PR bond and released. I will say that the charge is questionable at best and after speaking with my Attorney I will allow him/her decide what can and cannot be posted here.
So to all those reporting I was taken out in hand cuffs, I assure you I walked out with no cuffs, carrying my bags from the NPC. I also feel it important to state that the NPC staff conducted themselves with nothing short of kindness and professionalism from the moment I arrive to the moment I left.
Yes there are some questions for the US Attorney’s Office in the FBI investigation of the death threats, the arrest on the Delaware matter and the denying of phone access, medication and medical treatment while being held in custody in DC. Just as there are some questions as to Judge Melendez’ refusal to allow me to report to Delaware and her holding me over on a DC produced warrant that did not reflect the Delaware issue appropriately, and her failure to order my being provided my prescribed medications and phone access even to my attorney. There are some questions for the US Marshall’s Office and the way I was treated when I repeatedly requested access to my medication and/or medical treatment
Dude you have commented here before, and I remember this because you too are a liar, and are borderline INSANE.
Sinclair is the scum of the earth, people who are buying into his BS are more or less pathetic. How about this:
There, I came clean – I just broke the story. I mean I have no proof, alibi or anything like that – and hell, I would probably fail a lie detector test, but hey – all those are meaningless, right?
Mr. Veritas, if thats even your name (which I am pretty sure it isn’t) if I remember correctly you were a Ron Paul supporter… I say this because I remember your mindless cutting and pasting when he was still involved in the race.
Do me a favor and don’t come back to this site – I have put up with your deceitful, spamming, and worst of all, factually absent comments for too long now and am done.
Good Day.
