It is no secret that the GOP is only beginning its smear campaign aimed at ruining the reputation of Senator Barack Obama, and his wife Michelle. While the mainstream media seemingly sits bye, eating up the often times comical “rumors” and “accusations” the Democrats have been forced to take to their defenses – which included the Obama campaign opening a web site specifically focused on combating the spread of unsubstantiated lies. While very few outside of the Obama campaign, and his supporters on the web, have stepped forward too set the record straight on what’s currently going on – that is until today, and the person who told the media, and the Republican to “lay off” may surprise you.

Former Republican Presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, a man who gained the respect of so many through his run for the Republican nomination regardless of ideological differences (yes there is a difference between agreeing with someone’s politics, and respecting the person they are) told fellow Republicans earlier today to “lay off Obama.”

Fromm CNN’s Political Ticker:

(CNN) Former GOP presidential contender Mike Huckabee called Barack Obama’s candidacy “a landmark achievement” Tuesday, and warned fellow Republicans not to demonize Obama.

“Republicans will make a fundamental if not fatal mistake if they seek to win the election by demonizing Barack Obama,” Huckabee told reporters in Tokyo, according to a report by Agence France-Presse.

Huckabee praised the country for getting “to a point where we did not see his color but we truly saw his charisma, his message and what he brought to the campaign trail.”

“When people are really hurting and they are right now they’re not looking at a person’s race,” he added.

Huckabee said he hopes John McCain beats Obama, but that Republicans should focus on policy differences, not race.

Huckabee suggested questions about whether he might join McCain on the ticket were premature. “You can’t accept an invitation to the prom until the football captain asks you. So I’m not going to go out and buy the outfit just yet,” said Huckabee, according to AFP.

I know this one caught me by surprise, but when I sat down and put some thought into it I began to see that this is Huckabee speaking as an individual, not a politician with a pre-planned script or direction. He saw what was going on, realized it was wrong, and addressed the issue.

That is why I respect Mike Huckabee, while I whole heartedly disagree with his politics, I cannot deny the fact that he is a man who does what he sees as the right thing to do, regardless of the situation, or the people he may displeasure in doing so.
