(R-Va.) Rep. Tom Davis Uses the Racial Slur “tar baby” In a Memo Sent to GOP Members

May 16, 2008

Virginia Republican Tom Davis seems to have gone through a personal and political metamorphosis over the span of the last 72 hours.. Davis was preparing for a Senate run, that is until he realized former Democrat Governor Mark Warner was undoubtedly going to trounce him in the election, this epiphany (if you can call it that) was so strong that Davis decided to leave elected office altogether.

However Davis wasn’t going to just drift away into obscurity, no, instead he decided utilize his time left in the limelight too vocalize his prognosis of the Republican party as a whole and what they should expect going into the upcoming general election:

The House Republican brand is so bad right now that if it were a dog food, they’d take it off the shelf.”

Then going into even more detail Davis the next day had this to say about the GOP, who by all conventional wisdom are the equivalent of a “dead man walking” in terms of the outlook they are beginning to brace themselves for:

It’s no mystery,” said Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.). You have a very unhappy electorate, which is no surprise, with oil at $108 a barrel, stocks down a few thousand points, a war in Iraq with no end in sight and a president who is still very, very unpopular. He’s just killed the Republican brand.”

Clearly Mr. Davis is “bitter”, and that I would have to say that is a polite way to describe the mans feelings towards his Republican counterparts and more specifically, George W. Bush, who is fitting to cost quite a few of Davis’ fellow party members their jobs come re-election time.

Apparently though Davis has other, and from the looks of it, more serious issues on his plate. Issues that are enough to seal the deal if he was still privately up in the air about ever returning to elected politics. Politico.com is reporting that Rep. Davis wrote and delivered a in depth memo to his fellow Republican house members in which he used daunting racial epithets and continually disrespected Senator Barack Obama:

In a 20-page memo on GOP electoral woes, Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) repeatedly misspells Barack Obama’s name it’s one R, congressman, not two — and then manages to use the racially charged term tar baby” in a paragraph about Obama and immigration.

Remember,” Davis writes, Hispanic voters are a swing group in this election and future elections. John McCain, being from a border state, may be out of sync with many Republicans but he has standing among Hispanics. Barrack Obama has not made the sale to Hispanic voters. Thus, this issue is a tar baby for anyone who touches it, with land mines everywhere.”

After seeing this I think it is safe to say the Rep. Davis is not only a bitter old man, angry at the party he feels let him down, but also he’s a bigoted old man whose level of intellect is so pathetically low that he is forced to use racist slurs when discussing strategy. Something that he is clearly not very seasoned in seeing as though he dropped out of his Senate bid before it ever really got started.
