Fraud Alert: NRCC Treasurer Swindles $1 Million Dollars From GOP

March 14, 2008

This situation is bad, I mean really bad, and it’s not something that is going to just go away overnight. It is now being reported that the former treasurer for the National Republican Congressional Committee successfully (well at least until now) diverted hundreds of thousands of dollars, with the grand total likely to hit $1 million, of the GOP’s organizational funds into his own personal bank accounts. This startling news comes straight from the mouths of various GOP officials, who yesterday they describing the alleged scheme that could become one of the largest political frauds in recent history. For at least four years now, Christopher J. Ward, who is currently under investigation by the FBI, allegedly used wire transfers to secretly shuffle money out of various NRCC war chests and into other political committee accounts conveniently controlled by himself, the acting treasurer. These details were lifted from the NRCC leaders and lawyers first public statement since they turned the matter over to the FBI six weeks ago.

“The evidence we have today indicated we have been deceived and betrayed for a number of years by a highly respected and trusted individual,” -Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), Head of the NRCC

The magnitude of the alleged fraud staggered Republicans who are still struggling to grasp what has happened. Unfortunately this situation is far from over, and that may be putting it lightly. The GOP leadership has to begun bracing for the final accounting tally, which will be coming from the forensic audit in six to eight weeks from present day. And just why should they brace themselves for that final dollar amount? Well many high ranking NRCC officials have said they expect a total far greater than the minimum dollar amount which was cited yesterday in their statement.

This is a monumental happening, and as you break down the details of it the seriousness becomes even more jaw dropping. I mean $1 million dollars was stolen by their own treasurer, that is very historic, and not in a good way. It’s one thing to hear about a treasurer, or career politician pocketing, I don’t know, $20,000-$40,000, or even a couple hundred thousand dollars. Now granted that is a a lot of money, I am not arguing that, but what we learned today is a case of fraud that one man committed and looks to hit the seven digit mark, now that’s unprecedented. There will be a lot more to this story, which will begin leaking slowly but surely within the next couple of days, and you can imagine it’s going to get worse, before it gets better.
